Dr. Paul J. Alton has been an Optometrist since graduating The Ohio State University College of Optometry in 1988. His clinical experience began at the Metro Health Ophthalmology Center in Cleveland, Ohio. He is licensed by the State of Ohio to diagnose and treat most eye disorders, including eye infections, contact lens related problems, dry eyes and glaucoma. Dr. Alton is licensed to prescribe medications for treatment of eye infections and many other eye diseases.
Diabetic Eye Care
If you have diabetes and your eye exam reveals diabetic changes inside your eye, Dr. Alton will likely have a retinal specialist at Retina Associates in Lorain evaluate your condition. All of the ophthalmologists at Retina Associates work closely with Dr. Alton and you to maintain and preserve your vision if you do have diabetic eye changes.
Glaucoma Evaluation and Testing
Dr. Alton has the newest technology to detect early changes in your eye due to glaucoma. If he determines that you may be a glaucoma suspect, he will have you back in the office for further testing. This could include a recheck of your eye pressure and a threshold visual field. The most recent advance in early glaucoma detection is Sirus OCT. This new technology is like an MRI for your optic nerve. It can detect damage to your optic nerve years before glaucoma can permanently damage your vision. Dr. Alton has this advanced testing instrument in his office and may schedule you back to have this 15 minute test. Most medical insurances will cover this highly specialized preventative glaucoma test.
Macular Degeneration
If Dr. Alton suspects you have changes at your macula inside your eye that could be early macular degeneration; he may have you return for further testing or refer you to a retinal specialist.
Laser Vision Correction
Dr. Alton and his staff work closely with Clear Choice/ The Laser Center, for their patients that are considering having laser vision correction. Dr. Alton stays current with all of the most recent developments in laser vision correction. He will let you know if you are a candidate once he completes your eye exam. The CC/TLC center is located in Brecksville but, Dr. Alton does all of your post-operative care in our office.
Cataract Surgery and Dr. Alton
Dr. Alton does not perform cataract surgery. Dr. Alton refers patients for cataract surgery to local ophthalmologists and Dr. William Wiley, M.D. Dr. Wiley comes into our offices once a monthly from the Cleveland Eye Clinic. He does complete surgical pre-operative evaluations in our office. The surgeries are done at Premium Surgery Center off of Abbe Rd in Sheffield. All the post-surgical follow up care is done with Dr. Alton in this office. Dr. Wiley is available in our office or in his office in Elyria if any issues arise during the healing process. Medicare covers cataract surgery and pays for a portion of your eyeglasses after surgery.
